Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is the secret to a rich spaghetti bolognese?
The key to a rich, flavourful spaghetti bolognese is slow cooking. Simmering the sauce for at least 45 minutes to an hour allows the flavours to deepen. Using quality beef mince, adding a splash of red wine, and including ingredients like garlic, onions, and herbs also enhance the taste.
2. How long should I simmer bolognese sauce?
For the best results, simmer bolognese sauce for at least 45 minutes. This helps blend the flavours and creates a thick, rich sauce. If you have time, letting it simmer for up to two hours can make it even better.
3. Can I make spaghetti bolognese with lamb mince instead of beef?
Yes! Lamb mince works well as a substitute for beef, giving the sauce a slightly richer, more savoury flavour. If using lamb, consider adding a little extra seasoning, such as rosemary or cumin, to balance the taste.
4. What can I add to bolognese sauce to make it even tastier?
To enhance the flavour, try adding:
- A splash of red wine for richness
- A dash of Worcestershire sauce for depth
- A small amount of sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes
- Fresh herbs like basil or oregano for extra aroma
5. Can I make spaghetti bolognese in advance?
Absolutely! Bolognese sauce actually tastes better the next day as the flavours develop overnight. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
6. What’s the best pasta to serve with bolognese?
Spaghetti is the classic choice, but bolognese sauce also pairs well with fettuccine, pappardelle, or rigatoni—anything that holds onto the sauce well.
7. How can I make a healthier spaghetti bolognese?
To make your bolognese healthier:
- Use lean beef mince
- Swap regular pasta for wholemeal or zucchini noodles
- Add extra vegetables like grated carrot, mushrooms, or spinach
- Reduce the amount of oil and cheese
