It's Guy Fawkes

Posted on Monday, 4 November 2024

Today is Guy Fawkes, a day that remembers the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, where conspirators tried - and failed - to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I.

You'll often see fireworks being set off on Guy Fawkes night, with some people also lighting bonfires.

If you're planning on setting off fireworks, keep these rules and guidelines in mind:

  • Fireworks can only be bought from 2-5 November each year in the days leading up to Guy Fawkes
  • Legally, you can only set off fireworks and light bonfires on private land - fireworks aren't permitted on beaches, footpaths, roads, or at parks
  • Have a fire extinguisher or bucket of water on hand
  • Make sure you and others stand clear of any fireworks once they've been lit
  • Let your neighbours know if you're lighting fireworks, and avoid setting off fireworks after 10pm
  • Avoid lighting fireworks in dry and windy conditions, and around trees - visit the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website for restrictions and fire safety advice
If you have pets, they may experience stress because of the light and sound caused by the fireworks. Some may attempt to flee, which can cause them injury, so arrange a safe place inside for them tonight. The SPCA and Radio New Zealand have collaborated to play music from 6pm tonight to help calm pets' nerves, and they've also shared some tips to help your animals in this article.
