Kōkiri water use reductions

Posted on Friday, 8 November 2024

Our Kōkiri site has taken a number of initiatives this year to reduce its water use, working alongside engineers at the corporate office and using operation technology tools Canary and Ignition to analyse, monitor, and improve the processes.

In February the site’s coal boiler was removed and an electric boiler and heat pump were installed, and the team has been working through ways to reduce water use with this new technology. Its evisceration table – which required water to be running constantly during operation to clean offal – has been removed and ‘gut buggies’ introduced, where offal is manually rinsed. The team also identified and resolved an issue with a leaking boiler room valve.

These improvements not only reduce water use, but also reduce the need for electricity to heat water and pump it around site. It’s been a great step forward in our sustainability journey for the site.
