Driving safely in winter
Posted on Monday, 24 June 2024 under Health & Safety
If you’re heading out on a longer drive this winter, be prepared before you leave:
- Check the weather forecast and Waka Kotahi’s Journey Planner before leaving and choose the safest route rather than the fastest one.
- Keep snow chains, a first aid kit, a change of clothes, water, emergency rations, and a sleeping bag in your car in case of emergency. Watch how to fit snow chains here.
- Take care in shaded areas or on bridges where ice may not thaw as fast during the day as areas that get more sun.
- If you’re travelling long distances, let a trusted person know where you’re going, and check in with them when you arrive.
