Driving safely in winter

Posted on Monday, 24 June 2024 under Health & Safety

If you’re heading out on a longer drive this winter, be prepared before you leave:

  1. Check the weather forecast and Waka Kotahi’s Journey Planner before leaving and choose the safest route rather than the fastest one.
  2. Keep snow chains, a first aid kit, a change of clothes, water, emergency rations, and a sleeping bag in your car in case of emergency. Watch how to fit snow chains here.
  3. Take care in shaded areas or on bridges where ice may not thaw as fast during the day as areas that get more sun.
  4. If you’re travelling long distances, let a trusted person know where you’re going, and check in with them when you arrive.
