Transport of animals – time off feed requirements

Posted on Monday, 17 April 2023

A reminder of the requirements for sending in stock for processing:

Standing-off feed

Ruminants should be stood off green feed, with water provided, and an appropriate alternative feed source (e.g. hay), for a minimum of four hours but for no more than 12 hours before transport.

Records for standing-off feed

It is an industry expectation the time off feed and time off transport are recorded on the ASD documentation.

Check list for transport:

☐  Transport company booked and confirmed

☐  Only animals fit for transport are selected. If unsure, is a veterinary certificate required?

☐  Ruminants stand-off feed requirements respected

☐  ASD completed INCLUDING standing-off feed records

☐  Movement of cattle and deer are recorded in NAIT

Please see this flyer for more information. MPI also provides a pamphlet on animal welfare regulations for dairy cows.

MPI supplies the ‘FIT for Transport’ app you can download to use to check prior to transporting. Download it from the Apple Store or Google Play Store
